Bedford Modern School is an old foundation dating back to the 16th Century, although we moved to our present site adjacent to our school playing fields in 1974. Largely a day school, a new boarding house was opened in 1984 for up to 65 boarders, offering continuity of education from 7-18 years. Our latest developments have been a new Technology wing, an extension to our Junior School for Art and Science, and an extension to the Music School. A new 6th Form Centre opened in September 1996, and a new Junior School library opens in October 1997.
The School is a boys' school with just under 1100 students, including 200 Junior School students with their own buildings on the same campus, enabling them to use the upper school facilities as well as their own. Boys enter at 7, 8 or 9 and the Senior School at 11 and 13 with a few places available at other ages. We also take students into the Sixth Form on the basis on GCSE results. The majority of students proceed to Further Education.
We compete very successfully at local and national levels in most sports. Our modern facilities include an indoor pool, a gymnasium, a Sports Hall, squash courts and Fives courts. Drama and Music are particularly strong, with 300 boys learning an instrument.
A great deal of time is spent on pastoral care via form masters, year masters and tutors, who all work with a large careers department.
The School offers a wide range of GCSE and A level opportunities. Most students take 8 or 9 GCSE subjects. Specialisation is delayed for as long as is practically possible and in the Sixth Form A levels are supported by a whole range of complementary and contrasting subjects. There are numerous Service Activities which flourish including CCF section, the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, Community Service and many clubs and societies.
Conveniently placed close to motorways (A1M and M1) as well the major airports, we are always delighted to show parents and students around the School.
